When Google acquired Fitbit in 2019, fans worried what would happen to the original tracker brand. One thing didn’t happen: The Fitbit brand didn’t disappear into the hardware abyss that consumed Google Glass, Pixel Slate, the Nexus One, among others. (Nexus One? Exactly.) Instead, in 2020, came the release of Fitbit Versa 3 and Fitbit Sense. Both were solid evolutions of Fitbit hardware, built on Google’s Wear OS, and featuring nifty tools like Google Assistant integration. The consensus among Fitbit fans and Google watchers: Solid, if not thrilling.

Now, two years later, comes the Fitbit Versa 4, packed with more Wear OS features, and selling for $249, roughly the same as a mid-level Apple Watch. What can it do? It has built-in GPS with GLONASS support, (that’s apparently a Russian variant of GPS with an unfortunate name), a built-in speaker with Bluetooth call smarts, Google Assistant with Amazon Alexa support, and SpO2 tracking. Right, got that?

Bottom line: This would seem another competent upgrade. Yes, Apple Watch may still be the sexiest smartwatch on the market, but the Versa 4 offers Android users near feature parity with just enough style to wear to work or gym without concern for snide comments by the Apple faithful.
